Unicorn Pub in Kingwood Common

A lovely country pub with a pretty garden, which can do vegan food if you book in advance.

They know of the excellent Fry's products from Beanie's Wholefoods, which are all vegan and good for bbqs, mince dishes, etc. We hear they still have a stock of these in their freezer so you can turn up anytime, especially since the characterful landlord says he could invent you something vegan with no notice anyway at a pinch - he certainly knows his vegan stuff. However, he's not sure the demand is there - the best form of encouragement is eating there! Book in advance to help him do you proud (especially on a Sunday, when veggie offerings in this as with most pubs tend to be on a low ebb).

Thames Valley Vegans and Vegetarians had a lovely BBQ event here, with very generous portions and for dessert a choice of chocolate cake or pancakes and ice cream - both suitable for all.

Brakspears is the brewery, whose draft beers are not veggie, but their bottled beers are vegan.

If you want a short walk - ask for directions to "the Orchard" nearby - an area open to all which seems like an abandoned overgrown tree nursery turned into a community area. Rabbits abound. In late Summer and early Autumn it is laden with fruit, such as apples, plums, greengages and blackberries. Gorge yourself!

Just an update, we booked in advance recently at the Unicorn and were not disappointed, we had a lovely toasted chiabratta with cherry tomatoes basted in a lemon dressing, delicious. To follow we had a sweet potato compote and a vegetable tagine served with wild rice. For dessert we were treated to champagne sorbet. We have eaten out at some really expensive places and were very badly catered for. If you book wel enough in advance and specify you are a vegan when booking you will not be disappointed.

I have spoken to Tim and Steve at the Unicorn and the previous reviewer contacted the pub when they were away on holiday and had temporary managers in. They state they have not had much of a demand for vegan food hence do not have vegan items on the menu as a matter of course. They are however willing to do what they can at short notice, and will always provide a vegan meal if booked in advance. They are sorry that the reviewer was disappointed on this occasion.

Having attended a T3V bar b que at the Unicorn and looked them up on the T3V website to refresh my memory, I have just tried booking in advance for Sunday lunch at the Unicorn.

Disappointingly I found myself having to explain what vegans could eat and being told they had nothing suitable. I explained that they are featured on the local vegan website, which they new nothing about and then said that the landlord who new about these things was away.

It seems that the momentum they had to provide vegan choices is fading, as vegan food does not seem to be their strong point.
