Pizza Express - Reading

Omnivore Pizza Restaurant

Pizza Express & Redwoods

This is where the first fantastic vegan pizza party was held, featuring such delights as Cheatin ham and pepperoni and super melting Cheezly.

For several months in 2004 the wonderful manager, Stuart, got away with stocking such products. However, there has been an upper management clampdown, so vegans and the dairy intolerant are going elsewhere. For several months after that, if you gave them a day or two's notice they were still be able to get in some melting Cheezly.

With a lot of notice they managed a fantastic kids' DIY pizza party with completely vegan ingredients. Well recommended - would be a fun adults' party too.

While the Redwood's options lasted we vegans were adding as much as 2% to the restaurant's turnover, just by word of mouth knowledge. With more publicity and the great pool of dairy-intolerant pizza-lovers out there, the gain could be much bigger. Senior management will realise the great benefit of serving good quality dairy and meat alternatives in the long term. Let's give them positive encouragement!

Stuart the manager has now moved on to the Marlborough branch - lucky them! So we are not sure what the vegan pizza situation is now in Reading. If you know write a review here.

We reckon one day in the not too distant future a good pizza chain like this one will suddenly cotton on to how many new and loyal customers they could get by doing dairy-free melting cheese and such delights as Cheatin' Pepperoni. It could mean a 2-10% increase in their trade, depending on whether they market it or not. We'll keep gently encouraging them. If you want to know the story so far, and why this is such a magic formula, read: Pizza Express - a vegan history.

"There is a new seasonal Spring Menu. I am informed that the pesto no longer contains cheese. There are new vegan items and other items which are veganisable by the omission of cheese, ie a Bruschetta Verdure, a Pizza Verdure which replaces the Giardiniera, and an Insalata Verdure. The very salty nuts have gone and there are two new vegan amuse-bouches : Marinated Sunblushed Tomatoes with Marinated Sweet Garlic, the latter very mild, and Marinated Artichoke Hearts. - March 2006"

thanks to Peter Freeman for sending this in, who has also told us the seasonal menu changes quarterly with some additions and subtractions of the vegan(isable) items.
